Fr General has appointed Fr Leonard Chiti as the first Provincial of the Southern Africa Province

Fr General Arturo Sosa has appointed Fr Leonard Chiti as the first Provincial of the Southern Africa Province, with effect from 25th March 2021. This new Province will be made up of the former Zambia-Malawi Province (ZAM), the former Region of South Africa (SAF), now including Eswatini, Botswana, Namibia, and Lesotho and the former Province of Zimbabwe- Mozambique (ZIM).

Fr Chiti was born on 5th January 1968. He joined the Society on 2nd July 1993 and was ordained to the priesthood on 25th June 2005. He holds a Master’s Degree in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK.

Fr Leonard Chiti is currently serving as the Provincial of the Zambia-Malawi Province (ZAM). Prior to this, he served as a consultor to the Provincial for five years before being appointed Provincial.

He has previously served as Director at the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection, JCTR, parish priest at Matero Parish both in Lusaka.

Fr Chiti was superior at St Ignatius Jesuit Community in Lusaka and attended General Congregation 36.

He sits on several boards locally and abroad and has worked with a diverse range of people both within the church and outside. Let us thank God who is guiding the process of the restructuring of Province boundaries in Southern Africa and pray that Fr Chiti and his team will continue to be inspired by the Holy Spirit.
